J D JD started this petition to Scott Morrison (Federal Member for Cook) and

Bangladesh with its 160 million people, our loved ones among them, is suffering badly in this unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic and the situation is getting worse by the day. So far, the Government managed to vaccinate a negligible proportion of the eligible populations. We believe that Australia will have a significant surplus of vaccines in the coming days and has a unique opportunity to help Bangladesh. We are requesting Australia’s Leadership to consider sending surplus vaccines to Bangladesh and save millions of lives.

Currently, South Asia is reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic, where highly infectious and deadly variant/s of the viruses are spreading and creating illness and death. Varying sources confirm how fast the disease is spreading in Bangladesh too, and daily thousands are getting infected and hundreds are dying. Hospital beds are rapidly filled up with very sick patients and Bangladesh’s weak health care system is on the verge of collapse.

Bangladesh is ill-equipped to face this calamity. The only option to prevent the spread of the deadly virus is to vaccinate as many people as possible. So far, the Government managed to vaccinate only 3 per cent of its people with its existing stock of vaccines. A sizable number, especially the poor and those living outside the capital city are yet to be vaccinated. Besides, we are hosting 1.2 million Rohingya Refugees who also need support and must be vaccinated to stop further catastrophic outcomes. Within the South Asia region, it will be a regional catastrophe if we keep Bangladesh unvaccinated. Bangladesh is in urgent need of vaccines and is desperately looking for sources to procure vaccines.

We understand that in regards to vaccine stock, Australia is in a fortunate situation. It already secured many millions of doses of both AstraZeneca and Pfizer Covid vaccines plus continually producing AstraZeneca vaccines on its own. As a result, there will be a sizable surplus, especially of AstraZeneca vaccines which are not considered for the younger generation.  Australian Government will likely donate this surplus vaccine to other underprivileged countries. We all know vaccines has a limited expiry date. So, it will be humane to consider Bangladesh for the surplus vaccines.

We are appealing to the government of Australia to come to the aid of Bangladesh at this hour of dire need and allocate and donate a sizable amount of vaccines which would greatly help to prevent the current rising spike of the deadly virus and save millions of lives, especially those of the poor.

Please note, Bangladesh High Commission, Canberra, Australia is being kept informed about this noble initiative.
