Why this petition matters

Make absolute no mistake, our aged and disabled residents in Aged Care facilities are dying, or at the very least suffering from neglect and indignity due to staff shortages dogging these facilities across Australia. In a country like ours, it is nothing shorter than a National Disgrace.

Yes I am bias, my 97 year old Grandmother suffers dementia and is confined to a wheelchair. She is a war widow; her husband succumbed to injuries sustained in World War II. She single handedly raised her two children, operated a trucking business, contributed to her community and the economy. Now she suffers the indignity of being confined to her room, eating sub standard meals, regularly being locked away from visitors and can't even get her personal hygiene needs met at acceptable intervals.

My Grandmother is not alone; hundreds of thousands of Australians are in her position. Not all residents are elderly, with many disabled Australians also residing in these facilities. I am not blaming the staff; the staff who work tirelessly for pretty poor pay to care for these residents. I have on numerous occasions spoken to staff who have broken down in tears at the frustration at their inability to meet the needs of residents. Like our fellow vulnerable Australians who reside in these facilities, staff also need help, and they need it immediately. Many operators have some bloody hard questions to answer, but that will come later.

As a military veteran myself, who has served in humanitarian missions both domestically and abroad, I can tell you nothing makes you feel prouder than wearing your uniform, embossed with our national flag whilst assisting your fellow citizens. Our Men and Women who serve will put in 25 hours a day if they have to, and that's the truth. Assist our vulnerable and those who care for them, give our vulnerable some dignity and allow our military to serve.

The need is now. It is immediate. Our leaders need to stop arguing and engaging in pi$sing contests and get boots on the ground. I was once told in the military that the 'Standard You Walk Past is the Standard You Accept'. Well as a regular visitor to these facilities and seeing the look of dismay in residents and staff's eyes, I cannot accept it. I'll kick every door in I need to kick in to raise awareness.

Our media and the opposition is finally making their own noise, but it is a bit late to shut the gate once the horse has bolted. Show some bloody leadership, or get out of the game. My heartfelt thanks if you have read this far.
