Constitutional Reform in Australia

Constitutional Reform in Australia
The Issue
The Australian Government had excluded Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples from the Constitution for too long. It has been a while since there was talk on a possibility to host a referendum in order to formally recognise these peoples as original custodians of our land. They need the acknowledgment they deserve, and the Constitution altered in order to provide them with equal rights to the rest of the citizens in Australia.
There are multiple sections of the Constitution that need to be amended, removed or added; section 25 says the States can ban people from voting based on their race: this has to be removed; section 51 can be used to pass laws that discriminate against people based on their race: needs to be removed. A new section should be added, section 51A that recognises Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and allows the Australian Government to pass laws that benefit these Indigenous peoples; section 116A needs to be added - banning racial discrimination by the government; and section 127A, recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages were the country's first tounges, although confirming that English is Australia's national language.
This is a crucial act the Australian Government needs to undertake in order to provide the long-awaited equality and fairness that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have deserved for many, many years.
