School lunches causing health concerns

The Issue

As a student, I can tell you that school breakfast and lunches are not healthy or tasty. The food comes from companies who have bad quality food but are cheap. I compared the meal costs to my school, "Robious Middle School" to a private school named "St Edwards" The average lunch at "Robious" costs about 2$, while the average cost of a meal at "St Edwards" is about 13$. I have a friend who goes to "St. Edwards" who confirmed that the prices may be expensive, but the food was of the utmost quality. The pizza at my school can contain cardboard in it, the milk is usually expired or expires in a couple of days, and the chips and desserts are almost always stale. Stale and expired food can cause serious health concerns such as increased chance of foodborne illness, and I do not think it is fair for students to miss school because they ate food that the school provided them.

If things stay the same, more students will continue to miss school due to getting sick by eating cafeteria food and considering how attendence is also a problem, keeping things how they are is not the best idea. Even though it is rare to ever be deadly, Listeria (which is a foodborne illness) still kills about 260 people in the United States every year. That's about as much people there are in my 8th grade.

If we were to act now, less people would get sick and skip school, ceasing part of the attendence issue. Also, more students would want to buy lunch because it would taste better and would be more beneficial, giving the school more money. I think we can fix this if we swap out the current suppliers with more local and beneficial ones such as "Morisseys Catering Co" or "Red River Foods".
