School days off due to Mental Health.
The Issue
⚠️ If you could please share this petition. LETS MAKE A CHANGE TOGETHER!!! NATIONWIDE ⚠️ Also let's get these signatures going!!!!
I would like to start off by saying why this means something to me to make this petition. I personally have anxiety, seasonal depression, as well as certain health conditions that throw off my moods where I can be perfectly fine one day and then the next be the complete opposite. This isn't just my story—many students across our nation face similar challenges, and the impact on their education can be devastating.
Students diagnosed with mental health disorders often struggle silently, fearing stigma or a lack of understanding from their educators and peers. Imagine being a student who is trying their best to keep up with school while also battling internal challenges that no one else can see. It can be incredibly overwhelming, to the point where attending school feels like an impossible task.
Mental health is as essential as physical health, yet our educational system often overlooks this critical aspect of student well-being. Allowing students to take a certain number of mental health days each month would acknowledge the importance of mental wellness, provide necessary relief, and improve overall academic performance. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 1 in 5 youth aged 13–18 experience a severe mental disorder at some point during their life. With these statistics, it's evident that our approach to education must evolve.
Anxiety is a common issue with many different kinds. Here are a few.
Generalized Anxiety. Example: Excessive worry about school and grades not being good enough, worrying about health. Generalized Anxiety can be brought on without any triggers as well.
Social Anxiety. Example: Meeting new people, making friends, feeling like they may not fit in with others. Therefore they would rather isolate and be alone instead of feeling like they arent going to be able to make friends or fit in and the fear of being made fun of.
Separation Anxiety. Example: Not able to be away from a parent or parents, grandparents, siblings etc. They feel safe where they are most comfortable and with who they are most comfortable with. They get into fight or flight mode if they are left to be alone with others that they are not familiar with.
Problems at home. Example: The environment they are in at home may not be safe for many reasons. Violence, Neglect, Substance Abuse, Having to take care of themselves and their siblings at a early age due to problems with their parents.
ADHD as well as Genetics can also play a part in Anxiety as well.
Implementing a policy that allows for mental health days can be a simple yet effective way to support students. Schools nationwide have the power to change the narrative and provide environments that prioritize both educational achievement and student health. By educating teachers and staff about mental health, and creating a system where students can openly communicate their needs, we can foster a more inclusive and supportive educational experience.
Join me in advocating for mental health days for students. Sign this petition to urge school boards and educational leaders to adopt policies that address the mental health needs of students. Let's ensure that all students have the opportunity to thrive both mentally and academically. This also includes K-12 students who aren't in a normal public/ private school setting and are enrolled through homeschooling. Every student regardless of the school setting should have equal opportunities especially when it comes to something so important such as the wellbeing of their mental health and their health in general.
