Add Eid Holidays to the Hewlett Woodmere Public School Calendar!

The Issue

As a community, we have been requesting the school board to add Eid to the public school calendar for several years. Unfortunately, we continue to be denied with a plethora of unacceptable excuses as to why it can’t be done.

We are not asking for special consideration, instead, we are asking the district to honor its diversity, equity, and inclusion statements by giving ALL students the right to practice their faith traditions, worry-free, with a day off from school.

Right now, our students have a difficult decision to make each year when it is Eid. Do they go to school and miss celebrating one of the high holy days of the year? Or do they miss school and be responsible for rigorous amounts of work that has to be made up?

It is unfair that for years our students have to make this decision yet the district falsely claims that they: “value diversity and inclusion..and respect our individual differences”

Right now, 22 public school districts in Nassau county have APPROVED and added Eid to the school calendar.

There is NO COST and NO NEGATIVE IMPACT to the community and school district by adding Eid to the school calendar.

But the benefits are HUGE! Students who practice diverse faith traditions help create inclusive communities by raising awareness, increasing tolerance, and giving back to the community that they belong to!

The 22 districts that have approved EID so far have made VERY LITTLE modifications to the school calendar. Most simply changed the days of Eid to align with the designated “Superintendents Conference Days” and kept schools open for staff. While other districts even closed completely depending on their level of board support!

Adding Eid to the school calendar is VERY DOABLE and we implore you to support our humble cause! Please sign our petition of support!
