Excellent new FLE resource: www.parentandchild.org Launch

Parents, Family and Friends of FCPS Students

Sep 17, 2016 — I received an email about a new organization launch (press release at the end). They created a great resource for making FLE opt-out decisions, and will hold a meeting to present an overview of their materials. The group has gone through each lesson of every grade for the FCPS Family Life Education curriculum materials, and produced a really excellent color coded guide to each lesson (green, yellow, red) to indicate acceptability of materials for each child's grade.

I opted my child out of the entire year, but for those who want to pick and choose the lessons but don't have the time to go through the mountain of materials, this guide is a really excellent resource.

They are having a meeting to launch the website and materials:

Sunday, September 18 at 7PM
Sully District Government Center
4900 Stonecroft Blvd.
Chantilly, VA

NOTE: I was told that the website will become active in coordination with the meeting, it is not available today.

Parent and Child.org to Launch Parent Guide and Website
re: Fairfax County Public Schools’ Family Life Education Program
15 September 2016, Fairfax, Virginia – A new group, Parent and Child.org, will launch their website, parentandchild.org, and release their comprehensive Parent’s Guide for Fairfax County Public Schools Family Life Education (FLE) Curriculum on Sunday, September 18, at 7PM in the McConnell Room at Sully Governmental Center, 4900 Stonecroft Blvd., Chantilly, VA.

Beginning with the 2016-2017 school year, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is introducing a new Family Life Education (FLE) Curriculum. ParentAndChild.org has produced a color-coded guide which can serve as a starting point for parents as they make their decisions about the suitability of each lesson for their own children.

“We have worked diligently since the release of the curriculum August 1st to review each and every lesson. We are excited to offer this FLE Parent Guide as a resource to busy parents. FCPS has made significant changes to the FLE program for the 2016-2017 school year. It is our hope that parents will be inspired to review the lessons themselves and evaluate this new material,” explained John Murray, President of Parent and Child.org.

By the laws of the Commonwealth, parents have the right to opt their child(ren) out of any or all of the FLE lessons. The color-coded guide was designed to be a resource to assist parents in making an informed decision with regard to Family Life Education program.

On Sunday, September 18th at 7:00 p.m. at the Sully Governmental Center, 4900 Stonecroft Boulevard, Chantilly, VA, McConnell Room, Parent and Child will launch their website, present an overview of the FLE Parent Guide and evaluation summaries, and distribute color-coded guides. The public is welcome. However, due to the sensitive nature of some of the material contained the FLE curriculum, discretion advised. May not be suitable for children.

Parent and Child.org is a group of Fairfax County parents whose backgrounds include education, health care and biology. Additional information is available at ParentAndChild.org. Please contact Carol Nyce at 703/894-7973 or Meg Kilgannon at 703-507-5998 to arrange an interview to obtain additional information.
