On September 9, 2021 SBNation.com printed an article written by StewMonkey13 entitled "The Wave In The Time of Covid19."

The writer minimizes "The Wave" at Iowa games by interjecting his opinion of the song, and gives a very rough explanation of its purpose.  He even states his daughters have been patients, but admits they were not long stays.  He mentions this year, the return of "The Wave" makes him "nauseous and angry."  Yet, he does not reveal if he is in attendance himself.  

The article says "It’s disgusting and hypocritical.  There are currently 7 pediatric inpatients at Stead with COVID. It’s making the act not about the kids in the hospital, but about making you feel good standing there and waving, while actively hurting those that hospital serves."  

He concludes "It’s not about the kids anymore. It’s a self-congratulatory circle jerk."

In fact, several UIHC providers, the Kid Captain program itself, and former patients have contested, saying "The Wave" is critical to them & they even participated.  My son being one of them, a former Kid Captain.
