SAY NO TO THE LOTUS SYMBOL ON THE VIETNAMESE REFUGEE MEMORIAL IN MARRICKVILLE ( tiếng Việt bên dưới) 

**Summary of the petition:

A Vietnamese Refugee Memorial is about to be installed in Marrickville, with the lotus as its symbol & frame as “Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War and a new beginning”

This project is scheduled to be permanently installed this April, just two weeks from now.

For many refugees, the lotus represents the regime we were forced to flee, not our story.

This decision was made during Lunar New Year, when many in our community were unaware.

Our silence does NOT mean agreement.

This memorial must reflect the refugee journey of sacrifice in the search for freedom, and should be clearly stated as: “Commemorating the Vietnamese refugee journey into freedom and a new beginning.”

We call on Inner West Council to reject the lotus design.

We call on all Vietnamese who cherish freedom, as well as all those who respect the values of refugees, to stand together and sign this petition.

We respectfully urge Inner West Council to reconsider and reject the use of the lotus flower as the symbol representing Vietnamese refugees in the Vietnamese Refugee Memorial in Marrickville.

This memorial is expected to be completed by April. However, a decision about a symbol of such deep refugee historical significance must not be rushed, especially when it does not truly reflect the identity, history, and lived experience of the community it intends to honour

BREACH OF MANDATE

We can prove that the project is currently failing its own mandated requirements for community consultation.

Why it matters: This was the birth of the project. It legally committed the Council to "recognising the contribution of the Vietnamese community."

2/ The Formal Mandate for Consultation (23 September 2025):

Key Section: Item 33, Resolution regarding the Vietnamese Refugee Memorial.

Why it matters: > The Council specifically resolved to "begin consultation with the Vietnamese community." However, in practice, the Council had already selected the lotus sculpture before the consultation even began. By presenting a pre-selected symbol associated with the current regime and conducting the "consultation" during the busy Lunar New Year (Tết) period, the Council has breached both the spirit and the letter of the 2025 resolution.

Why it matters: This is the most recent internal document. It admits the "Lotus" design was chosen by "Council officers and an artist" rather than being co-designed with the refugee community.

OUR POSITION

Although the Council states that there was a public consultation process, this took place during February, Lunar New Year time, when the Vietnamese community is traditionally occupied with family & cultural commitments.

Many members of our community were not aware of this announcement and therefore had no opportunity to respond.

Our silence does NOT mean agreement.

We do not accept the lotus flower as a symbol representing Vietnamese refugees in Marrickville, in Australia, or in the broader overseas Vietnamese community.

For Vietnamese refugees, the lotus is not a neutral cultural symbol.

While it may be considered a traditional flower, in the modern political context it is closely associated with the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. For the post-1975 diaspora, the lotus is linked to Nghệ An known as “Làng Sen,” the birthplace of Ho Chi Minh, the leader & founder of the Communist Party, and to the political system that led to our displacement, persecution, and loss of homeland.

It does not represent us.

It represents the regime we were forced to flee.

For many in our community, this symbol is not only inappropriate, it is deeply painful. It does not honour our story; it reopens wounds and causes emotional distress every time we are confronted with it.

WHY THIS MATTERS

The purpose of a memorial is to honour a specific history.

Our history is the history of refugees who fled communism, people who risked their lives at sea and through jungles in search of freedom, dignity, and a new beginning.

By choosing a “neutral” or aesthetic symbol like the lotus, the Council risks erasing the true origin and identity of Vietnamese refugees.

Our journey, our sacrifices, and our values cannot be represented by a symbol that is disconnected from and, to many, politically opposed to our lived experience.

 

WHAT THIS MEMORIAL SHOULD REPRESEN

This memorial must honour the truth.

It must reflect:

 • The identity of Vietnamese refugees

 • The history of the Boat People

 • The values of sacrifice in the pursuit of freedom, resilience, and new beginnings

NOT symbols that distort or disconnect from that history.

 

OUR REQUESTS TO COUNCIL

We respectfully call on the Council to:

 1. Withdraw the lotus design immediately

 2. Conduct meaningful consultation with the Vietnamese refugee community

 3. Adopt symbols that truly represent our history, such as:

 • The Boat People journey

 • The Heritage and Freedom Flag (yellow flag with three red stripes)

 4. Allow more time if necessary to ensure the memorial is accurate, respectful, and meaningful

 5. Clarify the purpose of the memorial, so that it serves Vietnamese refugees who have contributed to Australia as taxpayers and citizens, particularly in the Inner West, where many are of refugee background

We respectfully request that the memorial’s purpose be reframed as:

“Commemorating the Vietnamese refugee journey into freedom and a new beginning,”

rather than

“Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War and a new beginning.”

We further request that this meaning be clearly presented in both English and Vietnamese on the memorial.

RESPECTING THE COMMUNITY

The “Little Vietnam” area in Marrickville exists because of the sacrifices and enduring contributions of Vietnamese refugees the Boat People.

To build a memorial in this location using a symbol that many in our community find politically distressing is an affront to that legacy, and to the broader history of Vietnamese refugees in Australia and around the world.

We ask the Council to show genuine respect by choosing a design that our community can stand beside with pride, one that truly honours our journey and our contribution to a diverse, free, and humane Australia.

THỈNH NGUYỆN THƯ - KHÔNG CHẤP NHẬN DÙNG HOA SEN CHO ĐÀI TƯỞNG NIỆM THUYỀN NHÂN TẠI MARRICKVILLE

Tóm tắt câu chuyện:

Một Đài Tưởng Niệm Thuyền Nhân Việt Nam sắp được xây dựng tại Marrickville, với biểu tượng là hoa sen và nội dung “Kỷ niệm 50 năm chấm dứt Chiến tranh Việt Nam và một khởi đầu mới”.

Dự án này dự kiến sẽ được lắp đặt vĩnh viễn vào tháng 4, chỉ còn hai tuần nữa.

Đối với người tị nạn, hoa sen gắn liền với chế độ mà chúng ta phải bỏ nước ra đi, không thể là biểu tượng của người Việt tị nạn hải ngoại.

Quyết định này được đưa ra vào dịp Tết Nguyên Đán, khi nhiều người trong cộng đồng không hề được biết đến.

Giờ chúng ta biết, xin bày tỏ chúng ta không chấp nhận biểu tượng hoa sen, trước khi nó được xây vĩnh viễn.

Chúng ta yêu cầu, đài tưởng niệm này phải phản ánh đúng hành trình tị nạn hy sinh tìm tự do và cần được ghi rõ là: “Tưởng niệm hành trình người Việt tị nạn đi tìm tự do và một khởi đầu mới.”

Chúng tôi kêu gọi Inner West Council  không sử dụng thiết kế hoa sen.

Chúng ta trân trọng đề nghị Inner West Council xem xét lại và không sử dụng hoa sen làm biểu tượng đại diện cho người Việt tị nạn trong Đài Tưởng Niệm Thuyền Nhân Việt Nam tại Marrickville.

Đài tưởng niệm này dự kiến hoàn thành vào tháng 4. Tuy nhiên, một quyết định về biểu tượng mang ý nghĩa lịch sử tị nạn như vậy không nên bị vội vàng thông qua, đặc biệt khi nó không phản ánh đúng bản sắc, lịch sử và trải nghiệm thực tế của cộng đồng được tưởng niệm.

• Tầm quan trọng: Đây là tài liệu nội bộ mới nhất. Văn bản này thừa nhận thiết kế "Hoa sen" được lựa chọn bởi "các cán bộ Hội đồng và một nghệ sĩ" thay vì được đồng thiết kế cùng với cộng đồng người tị nạn.

 

LẬP TRƯỜNG CỦA CHÚNG TÔI

Mặc dù Hội đồng cho biết đã có quá trình tham khảo ý kiến cộng đồng, nhưng việc này diễn ra vào tháng 2 – thời điểm Tết Nguyên Đán, lúc cộng đồng người Việt thường bận rộn với gia đình và các hoạt động văn hóa, ít thời gian cho việt xã hội.

Nhiều thành viên trong cộng đồng không hề biết đến thông báo này, nên không có cơ hội lên tiếng.

Sự im lặng không hay biết của chúng tôi KHÔNG có nghĩa là đồng ý.

Chúng tôi không chấp nhận hoa sen là biểu tượng đại diện cho người Việt tị nạn tại Marrickville, tại Úc, cũng như trong cộng đồng người Việt hải ngoại trên toàn thế giới.

Đối với người Việt tị nạn, hoa sen không phải là biểu tượng trung lập.

Dù có thể được xem là một loài hoa truyền thống, nhưng trong bối cảnh chính trị hiện đại, hoa sen gắn liền với nhà nước Cộng hòa Xã hội Chủ nghĩa Việt Nam. Đối với cộng đồng sau năm 1975, hoa sen còn liên hệ với Nghệ An  “Làng Sen”, quê hương của Ho Chi Minh, người sáng lập và lãnh đạo Đảng Cộng sản, cũng như hệ thống chính trị đã dẫn đến sự ly tán, đàn áp và mất mát quê hương của chúng tôi.

Hoa sen không đại diện cho chúng tôi.

Nó đại diện cho chế độ mà chúng tôi buộc phải bỏ nước ra đi.

Đối với nhiều người trong cộng đồng tị nạn, biểu tượng này không chỉ là không phù hợp mà còn gây tổn thương sâu sắc. Nó không tôn vinh câu chuyện của chúng tôi; ngược lại, nó khơi lại những ký ức đau buồn và gây cảm xúc tiêu cực mỗi khi chúng tôi nhìn thấy.

SỰ QUAN TRỌNG CỦA XÁC ĐỊNH ĐÚNG MỤC ĐÍCH XÂY DỰNG TƯỢNG ĐÀI

Mục đích của một đài tưởng niệm là để tôn vinh một lịch sử cụ thể.

Lịch sử của chúng tôi là lịch sử của những người tị nạn cộng sản, 

những con người đã liều mình vượt biển, băng rừng để tìm kiếm tự do, nhân phẩm và một khởi đầu mới.

Việc chọn một biểu tượng chung chung hay mang tính thẩm mỹ như hoa sen sẽ làm lu mờ và xoá bỏ nguồn gốc thật sự của cộng đồng người Việt tị nạn.

Hành trình, sự hy sinh và các giá trị của chúng tôi không thể được đại diện bởi một biểu tượng không đúng ý nghĩa, thậm chí đối nghịch với chính trải nghiệm sống của chúng tôi.

ĐÀI TƯỞNG NIỆM NÀY CẦN PHẢN ÁNH ĐIỀU GÌ? 

Đài tưởng niệm phải tôn vinh sự thật.

Phải phản ánh:

 • Bản sắc của người Việt tị nạn

 • Lịch sử của Thuyền nhân

 • Những giá trị của sự hy sinh trong hành trình tìm tự do, sự kiên cường và một khởi đầu mới

không phải những biểu tượng sai lệch hoặc tách rời khỏi lịch sử đó.

NHỮNG YÊU CẦU CỦA CHÚNG TÔI VỚI INNER WEST COUNCIL

Chúng tôi trân trọng đề nghị Hội đồng:

 1. Ngay lập tức hủy bỏ thiết kế hoa sen

 2. Tham khảo ý kiến cộng đồng người Việt tị nạn một cách thực chất

 3. Lựa chọn những biểu tượng thực sự đại diện cho lịch sử của chúng tôi, như:

 • Hành trình Thuyền nhân

 • Cờ Vàng ba sọc đỏ (Cờ Di sản và Tự do)

 4. Dời thời gian nếu cần thiết để đảm bảo công trình mang ý nghĩa chính xác, tôn trọng và phù hợp

 5. Làm rõ mục đích của đài tưởng niệm, nhằm phục vụ cộng đồng người Việt tị nạn - những người đã và đang đóng góp cho nước Úc, đặc biệt tại khu vực Inner West

Chúng tôi đề nghị mục đích của đài tưởng niệm được điều chỉnh thành:

“Tưởng niệm hành trình của người Việt tị nạn đi tìm tự do và một khởi đầu mới,”

thay vì

“Kỷ niệm 50 năm chấm dứt Chiến tranh Việt Nam và một khởi đầu mới.”

Đồng thời, nội dung này cần được thể hiện rõ ràng bằng cả tiếng Anh và tiếng Việt tại đài tưởng niệm.

HÃY TÔN TRỌNG CỘNG ĐỒNG TỊ NẠN

Khu vực “Little Vietnam” tại Marrickville tồn tại nhờ sự hy sinh và những đóng góp bền bỉ của người Việt tị nạn, những Thuyền nhân, cộng đồng lớn nhất trong khu vực này.

Việc xây dựng một đài tưởng niệm tại đây bằng một biểu tượng mà nhiều người trong cộng đồng cảm thấy phản cảm về mặt chính trị là một sự xúc phạm đối với di sản đó, cũng như đối với lịch sử người Việt tị nạn tại Úc và trên toàn thế giới.

Chúng tôi kêu gọi Hội đồng thể hiện sự tôn trọng thực sự bằng cách lựa chọn một thiết kế mà cộng đồng có thể tự hào đứng cạnh, một thiết kế thực sự tôn vinh hành trình của chúng tôi và sự đóng góp của chúng tôi cho một nước Úc đa nguyên, tự do và nhân bản.
