Say “No to Terrorism.” Oppose Fatwa against ElGhlimi. Stand Up for Freedom of Speech

1. Who is impacted?
ElGhlimi, a popular online Moroccan freedom of speech and belief activist, was the subject of a Fatwa (Islamic religious opinion/ruling) declaring him to be an “apostate” and calling for his execution in furtherance of Sharia law (Islamic law). The Fatwa was issued by a group of extremists on Clubhouse, a social media chat app. A voice recording of this Fatwa was published on YouTube then widely shared on YouTube and other social media platforms. These extremists detailed how they planned to torture then kill ElGhlimi based on Sharia law; one of the extremists who referred to himself as “Saïd Rbati, the terrorist” affirmed he bears responsibility for his call to kill ElGhlimi. Saïd also said the killing should be carried out by tying up ElGhlimi, throwing his body into a pit and waterboarding him by urinating on him until he dies.
“ElGhlimi” is a nickname the activist uses for his personal safety because he lives in Morocco, a conservative country. However, the extremists offered 46,000 Moroccan Dirhams (MAD), which is over $4,500 U.S. Dollars, for anyone who provides them with personal information on ElGhlimi, including his location and/or photos.
ElGhlimi has been increasingly targetted by extremists following a recent phone conversation he had with Yassine Al-Omari, a very popular Moroccan Islamic preacher during which ElGhlimi asked if the preacher could provide him with evidence that Prophet Mohamed communicated with Allah (the Islamic God). The preacher ended the 18 minutes conversation with ElGhlimi without providing any response. which was embarrassing to Islamic preachers.
2. What is at stake?
Everyone’s right to freedom of speech and expression.
The Fatwa threatening ElGhlimi’s life is also a threat to everyone’s freedom of belief and expression, especially when it comes to talking about Islam. It is not uncommon for people who inquire about Islamic sources to be designated by many religious extremists as an “infidel” or “apostate” and be threatened by death. Many of these extremists target in particular former Muslims who try to exercise their freedom of speech and expression. Often times, former Muslims are forced to live in fear of being harmed or killed if someone learned it they left the religion of Islam. The extremists use various means including intimidation and persecution online and in real life.
3. Why is now the time to act?
Now is the time to spread the word and oppose the Fatwa against ElGhlimi because he is now hiding and avoiding public appearances in Morocco where he lives for the fear of being recognized, harmed and/or killed.
Let us sign this petition in defense of people’s right to freedom of thought, belief, and speech.
