Say No to Rodenticides - Rat Poison!

The Issue

To Property Managers, Condo Managers, Pest Control, Authorities and People.

This week is a sad week for the dog community - Kaya a 10 month old cavachon may have accidentally ingested rat poison which was fatal to the little one.

The story is heart wrenching and we urge those who have a few minutes to spare to read here https://www.instagram.com/p/CbG5uo_PrSP/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Rat poison in any form and dosage is dangerous as its highly toxic to both humans and animals. It must be handled professionally - this is not the usual ant or roach bait. Rat poison causes massive internal bleeding and in many instances fatal. Unfortunately, there have been numerous cases of rat poisoning when pets or babies unknowingly consume while on walks or in the garden. They often come in pellets and look like something that is unsuspecting and edible.

We understand the target is often rodents/pests that have become disruptive to the household but unfortunately pets, children have become collateral damage.

Ingesting rat poison is fatal - symptoms include:

Weakness and lethargy
Internal Bleeding - Vomiting or coughing blood
Nose bleeds
Bleeding from the gums
Blood in stools
Bruising
Breathing difficulties caused by bleeding into the lungs

Greater awareness to having proper storage and handling of rat poison needs to be created to individuals, households, pest controls, property managers etc.

We are not suggesting we let rodents run amok but surely we can put warning signs if rat poison is in use so one can make an informed decision and avoid the area.

We propose instead of rat poison pellets that look like food - use lure boxes, traps instead. The product should be a controlled substance, any blatant misuse needs to  have consequences and dealt with sternly.

We hope to start here, be a voice and save lives.
