The Labour government want to abolish all District and Borough councils in England, and replace them with much larger councils covering bigger areas.

In places where they take this plan forward they have said they will CANCEL the local elections which are supposed to happen in May. 

So your vote will be taken away - and you'll have no say for several years, while a new giant single council for the whole county is created.

BUT there are too many councils in England for the government to do this in every area.

So in the coming weeks government is due to decide which areas it will cancel elections in, and where to leave alone. Ministers have said they will leave alone areas where there is strong opposition, and go with areas where there is more agreement.

In Leicestershire the government's plan would mean abolishing: 

-Blaby District Council.
-Charnwood Borough Council.
-Harborough District Council.
-Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council.
-Melton Borough Council.
-North West Leicestershire District Council.
-Oadby and Wigston Borough Council.

And the proposal is to expand Leicester to take in surrounding areas - meaning significantly higher council tax and more housebuilding.
