Original Petition Below

The Topeka Planning Commission has tentatively signed off on a rezoning proposal that would allow for the construction of a new truck stop on the West side of the street of 605 SW Fairlawn Rd. The recently cleared lot of the previous Ramada Inn. The matter is moving on to the governing body for consideration.

City Council was slated to discuss/vote on the topic at the 6/17 monthly meeting, however the case has been removed from the agenda and intended to be on the 7/1 meeting agenda, UNLESS it gets pulled for any reason and sent back to the planning commission.

Let's stand together as a community and make sure our City Council and the Topeka Planning Commission know our residents do not want this public safety risk happening in our neighborhoods. This part of our city deserves to stay protected and continued planning for a safer environment for our residents.

This truck stop will come with an explosive amount of increased traffic. Subjecting our community residents to higher risks of human trafficking, drugs introduced into our community and more. This area of Topeka is home to part of our already vulnerable community...our youth, homeless, elderly and mentally struggling.

The one already existing Maverik in Kansas is in Garden City and labeled Maverik Adventure's First Stop.  This is not an adventure our district nine residents want to experience.

Reasons to VOTE NO to the Maverik Truck Stop:

*Residential area with many single and multi-family living housing.

*Close proximity to Landon Middle School. All children within a 1.75 mile radius are not provided bus transportation and our youths' safety will be at increased risk when forced to walk to school.

*Main corridor for teenage drivers traveling between TCALC and Topeka West High School who would be forced to cross paths with semi tractor & trailer traffic.

*Blocks from Sk8away, an attraction for youth and young adults.

*Negatively impact the public fishing ponds just north of 70. Our nearby Gage Park, Topeka Zoo and growing Kansas Children's Discovery Center.

*Literally in our Governor's front lawn, seems disgraceful!

*Potential negative effects on other nearby businesses, religious organizations and care facilities.

*This truck stop will increase a public safety risk of human trafficking, drugs, noise pollution and road deterioration.

*This area is already subject to crime with shootings in the area in the recent past.

*Increase opportunity for night time traffic of various illegal activities. !!Enough of this already happens in our nearby public park!!

*Easy get-a-ways with quick access to I-70 interstate.

*Increased City expense for road adjustments, repairs and maintenance.

*EB & WB exits and the intersection of Fairlawn and 6th are already tight and worn, needing repair. This would heavily increase that area's use and cost additional tax payer's money for repairs and expanding.

*This will encourage similar growth and we do not want that.

*Other established fuel stations for passenger vehicles already exist. This will drive them out.

*Old tanks from closed existing fuel stations and bigger ones across the road are not ideal.
