Say no to liquid chlorine storage in North Vancouver

Say no to liquid chlorine storage in North Vancouver
The Issue
For years, we have vigilantly monitored the growing concerns around the storage and shipment of liquid chlorine through our beloved community, the District of North Vancouver. Since Chemtrade acquired the property on 100 Amherst, they were aware of the 2030 deadline to cease operations involving the storage and shipment of liquid chlorine on the leased Port Metro Vancouver lands. This agreement was set in stone to ensure the safety and well-being of every resident.
Liquid chlorine is highly dangerous and poses significant risks. Even small leaks can devastate the environment, harming wildlife and posing a deadly danger to humans. The catastrophic potential of any mishap is not a distant fantasy but a terrifying reality waiting to unfold if rigorous measures aren't taken immediately.
The district's development and safety stand on the line. With families, schools, and businesses all in proximity to this impending hazard, we must prioritize the health and safety of our community over industrial logistics. Our community has thrived in unity, and now, more than ever, it's critical that our voices are heard loud and clear against the risks involved with liquid chlorine.
Ample alternatives exist that can replace the dangerous elements of chlorine with safer, sustainable options. Numerous chemical companies across the globe have innovated and implemented safer methods to achieve their industrial goals. It's time for Chemtrade to follow suit, fulfilling their obligation to the 2030 deadline and switch to environmentally responsible and community-conscious technologies.
Chemtrade has put forward the argument that their liquid chlorine is essential to maintain drinking water safety across Western Canada - but we now know that it is BLEACH, not pure chlorine that is used to treat drinking water. Because if there is a bleach spill - no one dies. Chemtrade can maintain their business, maintain employment and pivot to making bleach and other Chlorine derivatives. But stop storing and shipping the hazardous liquid chlorine!
By signing this petition, you are asking the District of North Vancouver to maintain their April 13th decision not to allow Chemtrade to move the storage and transportation of liquid chlorine onto their DNV Property. Let us protect our community, ensuring it remains a safe and sustainable environment for generations to come. Stand with us, sign now, and let's put the health and safety of North Vancouver first!
Please sing our petition! Please write to DNV Council at council@dnv.org and input@dnv.org. Please also contact MLA Susie Chant and Minister Ravi Khalon to ask them to put the safety of our community ahead of corporate profits!
