Say NO to layoffs at WNYC, WQXR and Gothamist

The Issue

On Sept. 26, LaFontaine Oliver, the CEO of New York Public Radio, said he planned to lay off 12% of the organization's workforce in the coming days. That's at least 40 people dedicated to producing NYPR's signature mix of news, culture and conversation -- local stories that matter and journalism that holds power to account while inspiring wonder in the world around us.

Help NYPR save good radio and good Union jobs!

New York Public Radio is a nonprofit that's made up of local NPR affiliate WNYC, classical station WQXR, news site Gothamist, live venue The Greene Space, and podcast studios that produce iconic shows like Radiolab. We also reach the Garden State through New Jersey Public Radio.

LaFontaine has said that mass layoffs are necessary because of "macroeconomic factors" that have contributed to the organization's current financial deficit. But the NYPR Union is proposing a range of alternatives that would not only save jobs and the content our audience cares about -- they would also be better for New York Public Radio in the long run.

We are urging the organization to consider alternatives such as executive pay cuts, buyouts, New York State's shared work program and furloughs before finalizing any layoffs.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT:

-If you care about these nonprofit media outlets and their mission, please sign this petition urging LaFontaine, members of the board and management to avoid layoffs and instead pursue one or more of the alternatives the NYPR Union is proposing.

-Also consider making a donation to WNYC or WQXR and adding a note saying what you think of layoffs. (You can click "One-time donation" and then write in as little as $1 where it says "Other amount." The comment box comes up after the donation is submitted.) Suggested message: “Save public radio jobs! Layoffs are not the answer.”

MORE ON WHY LAYOFFS ARE NOT THE ANSWER:

Here's a presentation the NYPR Union made to leaders at the organization to show why layoffs will only hurt us in the long run, rather than creating the financial stability we all hope for.
