Restore and Preserve for Future Generations!
Thank you for supporting the Maitland community’s campaign to stop Reflections Holiday Parks from building a caravan park in the middle of our beautiful Walka Water Works Recreation and Wildlife Reserve.
We have had success with Reflections Holiday Parks withdrawing from the development proposal but Walka is Not Saved Yet! It is still threatened by the Maitland City Council’s development and Asbestos Contamination Remediation plans.
Maitland City Council is still committed to an “offering of overnight accommodation options” and “new access road to the accommodation site” in the reserve. MCC are currently in the process for developing these plans to be “DA ready” which includes the planning for the remediation of the Asbestos contamination.
While we are happy that the council is preparing the documentation to clean up the contamination, we are opposed to its “preferred method” which is to fill the historic water treatment filter beds with contaminated soil and cap them. The filter beds are of National importance being the very first construction of its type in Australia in 1887.
Our work to stop the unsympathetic development of the historic Walka Water Works Recreation and Wildlife Reserve will not stop until we achieve the restoration and conservation of this Nationally important reserve for future generations.
