Locals say NO to Injecting rooms in historic Melbourne precinct
Why this petition matters
We are an assembly of stakeholders from the Bourke Hill, Melbourne CBD residents, business owners, food legends and police, and we are rallying against the state government's drug injecting centre in the CBD because it is likely to make our neighbourhood unsafe and impact local businesses that rely on tourists.
The government is considering the Salvation Army headquarters on Bourke St - across the road from some of Melbourne's most famous iconic venues, restaurants, hotels & theatres where families regularly visit with their children.
As business owners we are still recovering from the impacts of COVID-19 lockdowns. We do not want any more hurdles.
While the welfare of drug users is one consideration to be made, this should not be to the detriment of the safety and wellbeing of workers, commuters, residents, customers and visitors.
Join us in opposing the government's plan to ruin our Capital city central district by signing and sharing this petition.
There is already a similar facility in North Richmond with the local community suffering daily issues that the “safe” Injecting Room brings. Residents witness daylight drug dealing in the vicinity of the Injecting Room, increased loitering at all hours around the facility with acts of public indecency being reported.
The Richmond Injection Room impact on its neighbourhood amenity is not without problems, and we don’t want to jeopardise the Bourke Hill, historic and tourist precinct by opening an Injecting Room in its midst.
The traders, restaurateurs and residents of the Bourke Hill Precinct do not want this facility in their midst. The police is already short-staffed in patrolling this area and the injecting room will add more burden on their limited resources.
Don't make our workplaces and homes “UNSAFE” and deter tourists and visitors from the historic area, which will likely have disastrous impacts on hospitality venues and business, severely affecting the local economy.
ACT NOW - Say NO to INJECTING ROOMS in the BOURKE HILL precinct.
