Say NO to Increase MORE THAN DOUBLE Daily Trash Tonnage at Prima Deshecha Landfill

The Issue

OC Waste & Recycling is proposing to more than double the daily waste intake at Prima Deshecha Landfill in San Juan Capistrano.

Their own Subsequent Environmental Impact Report (EIR) states that this project will result in significant and UNAVOIDABLE IMPACTS to air quality and greenhouse gas emissions — impacts that CANNOT BE REDUCED to a less-than-significant level, even with mitigation.

In other words, harmful environmental effects ARE ACKNOWLEDGED, yet the increase is STILL BEING ADVANCED.

Increasing daily TRASH tonnage means MORE methane and other landfill gas emissions over time, more truck traffic on La Pata Avenue, and greater cumulative impacts to nearby communities throughout South Orange County — including San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano, Rancho Mission Viejo, and other surrounding areas.

Zone 4, although not yet currently active, prepares new disposal capacity closer to Rancho San Juan, Rancho Mission Viejo, and San Clemente (including Talega & Forster Ranch). These cumulative impacts must be fully analyzed before any activation or increase is approved. These are long-term environmental and public health decisions that are not being taken seriously enough.

Thanks to your incredible support, we’ve taken an important next step and retained Shute, Mihaly & Weinberger LLP to represent and advocate for our community. This is critical, as we cannot rely on the County or supervisors to protect our interests - we need strong legal representation to ensure our voices are heard and our communities are defended.

To continue moving this forward, we are asking for donations to help cover legal costs. Every contribution, no matter the amount, truly makes a difference and helps us stand together in this fight. We are committed to full transparency and will continue to keep our community updated on our legal progress and how funds are being used.
