Copy of Letter asking for a referendum

To Jim McMahon MP,

I am writing on behalf of Gedling Conservative Association and the 3800 residents – a number that continues to grow – who have signed a petition urging that Gedling Borough does not become part of the Nottingham City Boundary.

Nottingham City Council has a long history of making bad decisions, many of which were instrumental in its recent ‘bankrupt’ status which is a stark comparison to Nottinghamshire County Council, which is debt-free, financially sound, and delivering high-quality services with the lowest council tax in the country. Proposals to disband solvent district and borough councils may be aimed at improving efficiency or saving costs but this not be the case with any amalgamation the city.

Any merger with Gedling with Nottingham City Council would not be in the interests of Gedling residents.

The City faces serious financial challenges and ongoing government oversight, whilst performing lower service standards and a severe lack of local accountability.

Despite misleading claims by our local MP (Michael Payne), who offered residents a 4th choice for Gedling to stay as it is, which is not even an interim option, residents clearly so want to join a bankrupt city.

We urge you to listen to our residents and ensure that any significant structural changes are subject to full public consultation or a referendum. The petition at https://www.change.org/Save-Gedling-Borough clearly demonstrates a democratic mandate for Gedling remaining within the County.

I am more than happy to send copies of the petition or provide anything needed to support a recommendation that puts residents first.

Yours sincerely,

Cllr Darren Maltby
