Say no to including Gedling Borough in Nottingham City Council’s boundary expansion plan.

Say no to including Gedling Borough in Nottingham City Council’s boundary expansion plan.
The Issue
The Labour Government have started a Local Government Review to remove our Borough and District Councils, with several options being considered. It has been reported that Nottingham City Council wants to expand its boundaries to include Broxtowe, Rushcliffe and Gedling for financial reasons.
As an ever-growing student population where students do not pay Council Tax, the revenue streams from other areas outside of the city is their key objective to get out of bankruptcy.
We must fight for the protection of the existing county boundary which provides better youth and adult services, libraries in every community, much lower Council Tax, £100 million investment across every part of the county, £50m building and expanding schools and increasing SEND facilities, £66.5 million investment into repairing our potholes and a council that is not bankrupt.
Nottingham City Council have made clear that they want to expand, so to protect your vital services and our precious green belt, we are asking residents to sign this petition calling on the Government to keep Gedling Borough within the County boundary, as part of the local Government reorganisation.
Nottingham City Council is a financially unstable authority, burdened by hundreds of millions of pounds in liabilities and a projected multi-million budget deficit next year. It is closing libraries and youth services, provides poor care and charges much higher council tax.
In stark contrast, Gedling Borough residents access good services provided by Nottinghamshire County Council, including libraries, youth centres, good quality care and record amounts of investment into repairing roads – while paying less Council Tax than the City.
Nottingham City’s financial struggles have resulted in severe service cuts, including library closures and proposed reductions to adult and children’s social care services. This is not the level of service that Gedling Borough residents deserve.
Why should Gedling residents shoulder the burden of Nottingham City Council’s poor decisions? Mismanagement of vanity projects like the failed Broadmarsh Shopping Centre redevelopment, the collapse of Robin Hood Energy, and the misuse of £51 million ring-fenced social housing funds.
A new council structure involving Nottingham City Council could put Gedling’s hard-earned success and financial stability at risk.
Take action now! Sign our petition to send a clear message to the Government: No part of Gedling Borough should merge into a new authority with areas within the existing Nottingham City Council boundary.
We demand the protection for our high-quality services and low council tax rates. Together, we can safeguard the future of Gedling and ensure our voices are heard.
Say no to a forced reorganisation resulting in Gedling Borough joining the City. Protect our Gedling community today and keep us in the County of Nottinghamshire!
This petition is supported by local Gedling Borough Councillors, including:
Councillor Mike Adams
Councillor Sam Smith
Councillor Darren Maltby
Councillor Martin Smith
Councillor Boyd Elliott
Councillor Lorraine Brown
Councillor Jane Walker
Councillor Helen Greensmith
Councillor Stuart Bestwick
Councillor Sue Pickering
