Norway has been one of the few countries pushing to open the deep sea to mining.
Public pressure, both in Norway and globally, has forced the newly elected government to pause all exploratory and commercial deep-sea mining in Norwegian waters until at least 2029! This major shift proves that collective pressure works. Your voice matters!
In other good news, the Cook Islands have delayed all deep-sea mining applications until at least 2032. Belgian company DEME’s subsidiary, GSR, is pulling out of the Cook Islands. With major companies like BMW and Samsung refusing deep-sea metals and the business case still unproven, momentum is building, but the fight to stop deep-sea mining is far from over. 💪🏽
Governments are starting to think twice about opening their national waters to destructive deep-sea mining. If you wouldn’t risk your own waters, why risk the High Seas?
We must keep up the pressure to ensure deep-sea mining on the High Seas does not get the green light. How?
