The Issue

The Alberta Government has quietly set forth a strategy to attract data centres to our province and secure it's vision of  Alberta as the "North American leader in AI-driven data centre operations." Ultimately this is choosing investing in harmful infrastructure over the health and safety of our people and environment.

Let them know this is not what we want for our province.

Why Should We Care? The Concerns that Data Centres can bring to Alberta

Massive energy demand (some data centres use as much as whole cities to power them)
High water usage (sometimes millions of litres daily for their cooling systems)
Pollution (air pollution, noise pollution and e-waste from replacing parts in the centres)

Exposing The Dark Side of America's AI Data Center Explosion

According to information from Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) as of October 25th 2025, Alberta has 231 applications (albeit these are not all approved, yet a high number regardless) for data centres.

In Your Communities: Grande Prairie, Edmonton, Red Deer, Olds and more.

Grande Prairie

Decemeber 2024; O'Leary Ventrues proposes "Wonder Valley AI Data Centre Park": what will be the largest AI data centre industrial park in the world, to be located near Grande Prairie, Alberta. Costing $70B for the full project.

Olds

January 27th 2026; Synapse Data Centre Inc. has plans to invest $10B to build what would be the largest data centre in Canada (currently), in the town of Olds, Alberta.

"According to specifications given by the company, the centre would have 2,000,000 square feet of capacity on over 300 acres of land."

This is actually the second proposal for a data centre in Olds. Data District Inc. on December 18th, announced plans to locate a data centre in the town.

Red Deer

October 2025; Red Deer County has approved the construction of an AI Data Centre in Blindman Industrial Park.

While this one is said to be a water-less facility, it is still an 120 acre site project to have it's own heat and power plants to fuel the centre.

Edmonton

October 2025; Reportedly Pembina, Kinecticor and Meta are nearing a deal to build a Data Centre near Edmonton, Alberta.  Currently not a whole lot of information on this however, so take that as you will.

* This is not a full compressive  list of all the examples, all of this however is sourced from  publicly available news reports and the Alberta Government themselves.
