Say NO to Congress's New $130 Tax on Electric Cars

The Issue

Congress is moving to slap a new $130 annual fee on electric vehicle owners — even as it considers suspending the federal gas tax for everyone else. If both measures pass, EV owners could end up being the only Americans paying federal highway taxes at all.

Last year, Congress already eliminated up to $7,500 in tax credits for buying or leasing an electric vehicle, causing sales to slump. Now a bipartisan House bill would go further — adding a flat $130 annual fee on top of whatever your state already charges. The bill also eliminates the federal Carbon Reduction Program, which funds EV charging stations, bike lanes, and traffic management systems.

The bill's sponsors say it makes EV owners pay their "fair share" for road maintenance. But the average American pays just $73 to $89 a year in federal fuel taxes — making this fee nearly double what most gas car owners contribute. And unlike a fuel tax, which rises with how much you drive, every EV owner pays the same flat rate regardless of mileage.

"This unduly penalizes people for making that choice," said Albert Gore III, executive director of the Zero Emission Transportation Association. "I don't argue that the number should be zero, but the number should be fair."

With gas prices up roughly 50% following the conflict in Iran, Americans have been turning to electric vehicles to escape soaring fuel costs. This bill makes that choice more expensive — not less.

We are calling on Congress to reject this bill and ensure that any road-use contribution from EV owners is genuinely fair — proportional, not punitive.
