Say no to a "renewable" energy zone in Mexico, NY
The Issue
I am a first-generation farmer in the town of Mexico, New York, and I’m deeply concerned about the proposed establishment of a so-called "Renewable" Energy Zone in our community. For many of us, farming is not just a livelihood but a way of life that provides sustenance and drives the local economy. The very essence of our community is rooted in agriculture, and we must do everything we can to protect our farmland, forests, and the future of agriculture for generations to come.
Last year, my partner Andy and I attended the Town of Mexico’s Farmland Protection Planning meeting, where nearly every farmer and landowner—about 95 percent—voiced their opposition to the development of large-scale solar and wind projects on our agricultural land. The consensus was clear: while renewable energy is important, it should not come at the expense of our fertile lands and the rich heritage of farming that our community upholds.
The proposed energy zone threatens to disrupt farming operations, impact food security, and harm the lush landscapes that define our town. Large solar and wind farms could lead to significant changes in land use, reduce available farmland, and alter local ecosystems. According to a study by the American Farmland Trust, New York state is already losing about 5,000 acres of farmland every year to development—this proposal stands to escalate those losses dramatically.
We are not anti-renewable energy; in fact, many of us support sustainable practices and technologies that coexist with agriculture. Instead of vast developments that monopolize our landscape, we urge officials to explore smaller-scale, community-driven energy solutions that integrate with our agricultural way of life. We must strike a balance between environmental goals and preserving the agricultural integrity of our town.
Join us in standing up for our community. We invite you to join Andy, myself, and many others on June 22 at 6:00 PM at the Mexico High School Auditorium. Let’s make our voices heard loud and clear. Together, we can safeguard our farms, forests, and future. Sign this petition today and help us stop the development of this "Renewable" Energy Zone in Mexico, NY.
