Say No to 2,000 Extra Student Beds on Owens Park Campus.

The Issue

We are writing to you today to address a pressing issue that threatens the very fabric of our community in Fallowfield. The University of Manchester has proposed a plan to construct an additional 2,000 student beds on Owens Park Campus.

We strongly believe that this expansion will have detrimental effects on our neighbourhood and urge you to join us in opposing this development.

Here are the reasons why we must stand together against the construction of these extra student beds:

1. Overburdened Infrastructure: Fallowfield is already struggling with inadequate infrastructure and services due to the high concentration of students in the area. Adding another 1,000+ student beds will overburden already overstretched local services such as healthcare, transport and policing, increasing tensions within the neighbourhood.

2. It will increase criminal behaviour in the neighbourhood, including drug dealing, burglaries and sexual/violent assaults. It will also increase transient noise for residents and increase littering.

3. The neighbourhood will become even more unbalanced. These plans do not support the World Health Organisation's (WHO) definition of an 'age-friendly' community, or Manchester City Council's priority to develop age-friendly communities.

4. A further reduction in local housing stock and loss of council tax because first year students often remain in Fallowfield in their second year.

5. Lack of Consultation: It is disheartening that this proposal has been put forward without proper consultation with local residents who will be directly affected by the development. Our voices must be heard, and our concerns taken into account before any irreversible decisions are made.

We implore you to support this petition and stand against the construction of 2,000 extra student beds on Owens Park Campus. Together, we can send a strong message to the University of Manchester that our community's well-being and interests should not be disregarded.

Let us preserve the character and integrity of Fallowfield for current residents, future generations, and all those who call this vibrant neighbourhood their home.

Thank you for your support in protecting our community!
