The Issue

Introduction: The Plight of Lake Urmia

Lake Urmia, once a thriving saltwater lake located in Northwestern Iran, has fallen victim to a devastating crisis. The lake has witnessed a catastrophic 95% decrease in its water volume, leading to dire consequences not only for the environment but also for the health and well-being of the people living in its vicinity. The alarming rate of its decline has given rise to salt storms, emanating from the exposed salt fields, which now pose a significant threat to the health of local communities. The gravity of this situation cannot be overstated, as the salts released by these storms contain heavy metals, contributing to severe health issues such as breathing problems, high blood pressure, and even lung cancer. This crisis is a direct result of human activities and misguided policies that have disrupted the delicate balance of the lake's ecosystem.

The Urgent Appeal: Preventing the Imminent Disaster

We, the undersigned, urgently appeal to the international community and its esteemed organizations to intervene and pressure the Islamic Republic of Iran to rectify its policies concerning Lake Urmia. The survival of this precious ecosystem is hanging by a thread, and swift action is imperative to avert an impending humanitarian and environmental catastrophe.

The Alarming Consequences: Health Hazards and Urban Threats

The consequences of the lake's depletion extend far beyond its immediate surroundings. With the advancing salt storms, which are set to encroach upon populous areas such as Tabriz and Urmia, the lives of more than 5 million residents are at risk. The inhalation of heavy-metal-laden salt particles presents a clear and present danger, potentially leading to widespread health complications and diseases. This looming crisis is a result of intentional alterations to the headwaters of rivers that feed Lake Urmia, including the construction of over 100 dams and the licensing of more than 30,000 deep wells. Furthermore, the unbalanced and unsustainable development of agriculture within the lake's watershed has exacerbated the severity of the crisis.

The Struggle for Change: A Plea for International Intervention

Despite the valiant efforts of the Azerbaijani community in Iran, who have employed peaceful and civil means to draw attention to the dire situation, the oppressive policies of the regime persist unabated. The plight of Lake Urmia underscores the urgent need for international solidarity and intervention to safeguard the lives, health, and well-being of millions who are at the mercy of this escalating crisis.

The Call to Action: Sign the Petition for Change

By signing this petition, we call upon all international organizations, governments, and concerned citizens to stand united against the impending disaster at Lake Urmia. We implore you to exert diplomatic and moral pressure on the Islamic Republic of Iran to reverse its destructive policies and take immediate and comprehensive measures to restore and preserve Lake Urmia's delicate ecosystem. The lives of over 5 million Azerbaijani people in Iran hang in the balance, and it is our shared responsibility to ensure their safety and protect the environment for generations to come.
