#SaveGambiaPort: Show the Contract. Renew the Law. Let the People Decide
The Issue
Petition Summary:
We demand the immediate release of the Banjul Port contract signed with Albayrak, the renewal of Gambia’s PPP legal framework, and a formal review by the National Assembly. The Gambia’s economic future cannot be signed away without public oversight.
Petition Description:
#SaveGambiaPort: Show the Contract. Renew the Law. Let the People Decide.
The Port of Banjul is not just a dock — it’s the economic heartbeat of The Gambia. It generates over 40% of national revenue, supports thousands of local jobs, and controls nearly all of our imports and exports.
In 2023, the government of The Gambia signed a 30-year concession agreement with a foreign company, Albayrak, giving it control over the port. But here’s the problem:
What’s Wrong with the Deal?
• No Public Contract Disclosure:
The contract has never been released to the public. Gambians don’t know what we’ve agreed to, what we’re losing, or what protections (if any) are in place.
• Expired PPP Law:
The Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Policy, which should regulate deals like this, expired in 2020. Yet the port contract was signed in 2023 — without legal clarity or enforcement mechanisms.
• No National Assembly Oversight:
Parliament — the people’s representatives — were not given the chance to debate or approve this deal, despite its long-term impact on our economy and sovereignty.
• Strategic Control Handed Over:
Albayrak now holds the keys to Gambia’s trade for the next three decades, during which time we may discover oil and gas resources. This port may become our main export route — yet the profits and infrastructure could be controlled by outsiders.
What Other Countries Did Right:
Unlike The Gambia, Senegal retained majority ownership of its port and ensured state control in energy deals. They negotiated better revenue-sharing terms and maintained public transparency.
Gambians deserve the same.
Our Demands:
1. Release the Full Contract to the Public
We have a right to see what was signed in our name.
2. Renew the PPP Policy Immediately
No more major deals should be signed under legal uncertainty.
3. Bring the Port Deal Before Parliament
The National Assembly must review, debate, and vote on the contract.
What This Campaign Will Do:
We are launching this petition to build public momentum. Once enough signatures are collected, we will formally submit it to the appropriate authorities and request approval to organize a peaceful public protest.
We will continue raising awareness through TikTok under the campaign @SaveGambiaPort https://www.tiktok.com/@save.gambia.port?_t=ZN-8wNfvNfsNOg&_r=1 — where you can find educational videos explaining the full story. Follow us and share the content.
This is more than a petition. This is a call to defend our economy, our future, and our right to decide.
If you believe in:
• Transparency in government contracts
• Economic justice and national sovereignty
• Public oversight on life-changing deals
Then sign and share this petition. The future of The Gambia depends on it
