This is a call to action for all gamers. If you love gaming, this post is for you. The point of this petition is to raise awareness for what is happening in the gaming industry, explain how it will affect customers in the near future, and hold these companies accountable for their anti customer practices. I need your help, but I can’t do it alone. So if you are like me, and would like to see the gaming industry make changes that benefit the customers, please sign this petition and spread the word.
Whats Happening?
Today, April 24th 2025, at 12:00am EST, the Switch 2 preorders went live. If you were thinking about preordering the Switch 2 or any of its games, I implore you to reconsider. Currently, the MSRP of the Switch 2 is $449.99 USD and the price of games range from $69.99 (Donkey Kong Bonanza) to $79.99 USD (Mario Kart World and several other announced titles), with the cheapest game being $39.99 (Bravely Default). The price of the accessories have also increased.

Today I have seen people, (family and friends) rush to try to get a preorder. There is this fear of missing out, or FOMO, that seems to be prevalent among the gaming community. Please don’t give into it. I have seen my friends, the same people that were (not too long ago) shouting at Nintendo to “lower the price!”, still went out of their way to preorder the system. Some will even become desperate enough to succumb to the newly scalped prices. I feel that today is a pivotal moment in gaming history. What we do or don’t do will affect the industry for everyone. So rather than letting April 24th, 2025 be known as the day everyone scurried to get some preorders, let it be known as the day, we took a stand! Please don’t give into FOMO. Save your money! Save gaming!
The Switch 2 and how it affects the industry
With this being stated, there is some misinformation about the original MSRP that I should address. Those original prices for the games, consoles, and accessories was not affected by the tariffs. To quote Doug Bowser during a CNBC interview: "...we didn't consider tariffs in that equation. We felt that was going to be the right price point for our consumers and the right value proposition..." (skip to 2:52
) When these tariffs do go into affect, I fear it will further increase the prices of these products. Also, if the Switch 2 and its games sells very well, it will send the wrong message to other publishers, and they will most likely increase the price of their games as well.
However, these prices aren’t the only issue. The topics of Game ownership and the future of physical media comes into question. For the Switch 2, Nintendo will be selling one of four options: 1) Regular cartridges that (hopefully) have the entire game on that cartridge 2) digital codes in physical packaging and 3) Game-Key Card (cartridges), which doesn't contain any game data on it. It's essentially a voucher or "key" to download the full game later. 4) Switch 2 Edition games. These "Enhanced" versions are available in both physical and digital formats. It includes the original (Switch 1) game and its upgrade pack, which allows for certain games to run at 4k and 60 FPS. It has come to light that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (along with Tears of the Kingdom) will be one of these “Enhanced” games. Sadly, that $10 upgrade (or if you choose to purchase the Switch 2 edition of BOTW, will not come with the DLC from Switch 1). It will need to be repurchased for Switch 2. A game that came out eight years ago, on the Wii U and Switch on March 3, 2017, costs $69 USD and doesn’t even come with the DLC.
Game-Key Cards Explained
These Game-Key Cards are cheaper to reproduce than the standard cartridges and thus, this format is encouraged by publishers. However, all the prices fall on the customer. They are still the same prices as the other Switch 2 games. Someday when Nintendo's servers shutdown, these Game-Key cards will be useless because you won't be able to download those games. Bravely Default for Switch 2 is the cheapest of these Game-Key Cards ($39.99), but that is a port of a 3DS game that is roughly 11 GB. Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S a remaster of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is roughly 2.2 GB, and will also be on one of these Game-Keys. Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition ($79.99) and Daemon X Machina (standard $69.99/limited $99.99) are some of the other third party games releasing in this Game-Key format (pictured below). We don’t know if these games will have proper physical releases in the future.
Enough is enough
This is not about the prices anymore… we need to send a message to the gaming industry that we will not tolerate any anti customer practices. If these companies feel the need to constantly justify the increase of prices in a lucrative multi billion dollar industry, constantly nickel and dime us with their monetization practices, constantly release broken/buggy games… then we should at least, as customers, question whether an $80-$90 games is truly really worth it.
What can we do?
I’m not just asking you to “boycott the Switch 2”… I am asking you to please vote with your wallets. For too long these companies have let their greed ruin, not just gaming, but all forms of media. They successfully changed customers into “consumers”, which is a term I despise. It implies that we only “consume product and then get excited for next product”. Let’s prove them wrong. If we are going to boycott anything… Boycott Nintendo, boycott Sony, boycott Microsoft, boycott Rockstar, boycott Capcom, boycott Ubisoft, boycott Epic Games, boycott Konami, boycott EA, boycott BioWare, boycott ANY and EVERY company/publisher that supports anti customer practices!
Boycott any company that fires all its employees while boast about their “millions of dollars of quarterly profits”. Boycott any publishers that want to put predatory monetization practices such as gachas, loot boxes, micro transactions, battle pass/season passes, or whatever they decide to call it in the future, etc. in their fully priced games. Boycott any company that releases a broken game, with day one patches that somehow makes the games glitches & bugs worse.
Thank you everyone for your time and thank you if you made it this far in the post. Thank you for reading, and yes, even thank you for skimming, or scrolling to the bottom. I know it was a long one, but it needed to be said.
