SAVE Wheelock Parkway! Don't let MnDOT pave over our green space!

The Issue

Don't let MnDOT pave over Wheelock Parkway!

MnDOT is planning to remove a considerable amount of green space and medians along Wheelock Parkway just east of the intersection of Wheelock and Arcade. Once this green space is gone we will never get it back.

Wheelock Parkway is a keystone of the Grand Round trail system. It was designed in 1909, and is meant to be a beautiful scenic passage connecting lakes Como and Phalen. Wheelock Parkway's tree-lined islands and pedestrian/bike path are a treasured green space that deserves to be protected.

MnDOT's design removes all of the character of the parkway on the east side of the intersection of Wheelock and Arcade. It moves several lanes of traffic considerably closer to the residential side of the street, removes the medians that separate directional traffic, and removes a substantial portion of the once tree-lined grassy island between Wheelock Parkway and Wheelock Avenue. It also creates an extremely dangerous shortcut from the alley on Wheelock Avenue across the pedestrian/bike path and into the intersection of Wheelock and Arcade.

We want to save the green space, preserve the original design elements of the parkway, and create a safe pedestrian/bike crossing over Wheelock Avenue by making Wheelock Avenue a dead end.

We want Saint Paul City Engineer Nick Peterson to request a change order and stop MnDOT from paving over our green space!
