SAVE WESTERN SYDNEY KANGAROOS!
The issue
We urgently need your help to save our beautiful 160 Eastern Grey Kangaroos and all other wildlife located on Western Sydney University, Werrington, near Penrith NSW.
Western Sydney University (WSU) have formed a partnership with Stockland developers in a proposal for a large mixed use development on 99ha of WSU land, including 1500 dwellings, retail and industrial areas. Only 12ha of land is saved for conservation. The proposal does not provide any designated wildlife corridors. All dams, except one, are to be filled in, including the one in the photo.
All wildlife will be severely impacted including birdlife. The beautiful, critically endangered Swift Parrot (photo at top) is known to be in the area. An estimated 500 exist, so their extinction is imminent. We must protect them. Once they are lost they will be gone forever.
Both before and after colonisation Kangaroos have inhabited this site and bring joy to many local residents and people travelling by car and train who feel fortunate to see Kangaroos in their natural habitat. People bring their families out on the weekend so they can see the Kangaroos.
Now these Kangaroos are going to be made ‘homeless’ with most of their habitat destroyed by development. There is a strong possibility that most, if not all the Kangaroos will be culled (killed). They are voiceless so we need to be their voice!
We want to make sure the Kangaroos are not culled and to do all within our power to have other options made available to avoid culling.
We urge NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment; Western Sydney University; NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service and Penrith City Council to preserve the mob of Kangaroos at Werrington and ensure sufficient habitat, designated wildlife corridors and foraging exists for them and other wildlife to survive into the future.
Please join us, speak up for our Kangaroos and all wildlife on the site and sign this Petition. Please distribute far and wide.
