The Issue

Our beloved Westbourne Co-op is facing the threat of closure due to actions from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). This closure would have a profound impact on the residents of Westbourne, particularly our older community members who rely heavily on local services. There is no regular bus service to Emsworth, which makes it difficult, if not impossible, for many to access alternative grocery stores and especially a post office.

For years, the Co-op in Westbourne has been more than just a store; it's a lifeline and a social hub for our community. It provides essential services and a meeting place for many, particularly those who are less mobile or who live alone. The closure would isolate our elderly population even further, who depend on the convenience and familiarity of our local Co-op.

In Westbourne, public transport options are limited. A single bus route that does not operate regularly means that traveling to Emsworth for daily essentials would be a significant challenge. Many of our residents don't drive, and the added travel expense would place an undue burden on families and individuals living on fixed incomes.

We call upon the CMA to reconsider their decision, taking into account the unique needs of our community. We propose a local consultation to explore alternative solutions that would allow the Co-op to continue serving Westbourne.

We urge everyone who values community, accessibility, and local employment to sign this petition. Your support will show the CMA and local authorities that the closure of our Co-op is not an option and that together we can find a way to preserve it for the people of Westbourne. Sign today to stand up for our community and keep the heart of Westbourne beating strong.
