Save West Wollongong Primary School Pool
The issue
West Wollongong Primary School pool was built in the early 1960s due to the hard work of the local community and P&C who raised the funds for the 17m in-ground pool.
The pool has been used by not just pupils of West Wollongong Primary School but also local children as a learn to swim school. In the last 20 years two commercial operators spent money on maintaining and improving the facility by enclosing it with a roof, upgrading the change rooms, heating the water and making it salt water (after previously being chlorinated) and providing free swimming lessons for the pupils of the school.
The pool was closed in March 2023 by the NSW Education Department claiming it was due to its condition and costs of maintenance. The comments about its condition are inconsistent with the complimentary feedback of a number of parents whose children were attending the pool before its closure. See attached article from Illawarra Mercury 24/10/23
Swimming facilities in Wollongong are limited and parents often find it difficult to book their children in for lessons. Please sign this petition to pressure the NSW Education Department to review its decision to de-commission the pool.
