Save the woodland at Swanson and W700N

Save the woodland at Swanson and W700N
The Issue
A developer is proposing to build a housing development on 80 acres of land at Swanson Rd and W700N in Portage, Indiana. Although there are some nice amenities proposed with the preliminary plan, such as a park and trails, the development would destroy most of a ~20 acre mature woodland. Approximately 6 acres of the woodland is proposed to be kept in two separate sections. This woodland is one of the last remaining sizeable acreage of woods in south Portage - a portion of town with relatively few parks and natural areas - and it supports an abundance of wildlife, birds, and native plants.
Sign this petition to show your support for working with the developer to save the entire woodland as a critical resource for our entire city. As Portage continues to grow, we must preserve as much green and natural space as we can while supporting responsible development.
In addition to signing the petition, there is a public hearing on the preliminary plan and rezoning requests for the development on December 2, 2024 at 6:30 PM at City Hall, 6070 Central Ave. Public comments will be accepted at the meeting or in writing to: Tom Cherry, Executive Secretary, City of Portage Plan Commission, Portage, IN 46368, tcherry@portage-in.com.
