Save the West Point Eagles. No more new landfills

The Issue

A Threat Looming: Protecting Our Communities from the Dangers of New Landfills, Strengthening Our Natural Resource Laws, and Protecting Our Nation's Symbol of Freedom.

A new landfill will pose a significant threat to our environment, health, and well-being in several ways:

Leachate contamination: As rain falls on landfills, it can dissolve contaminants from the waste, creating a toxic liquid called leachate. If not properly contained, leachate can seep into the soil and groundwater, contaminating drinking water sources and harming ecosystems.

Greenhouse gas emissions: Landfills are major sources of methane, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. Methane is released from the decomposition of organic waste in landfills.

Air pollution: Landfills can also emit other harmful air pollutants, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matter. These pollutants can contribute to respiratory problems and other health problems.

Land use: Landfills take up valuable land that could be used for other purposes, such as housing, agriculture, or wildlife habitat.

Imagine harmful leachate contaminating our precious water sources, toxic fumes polluting the air we breathe, destroying the wildlife we love, property values plummeting due to the proximity of an unwelcome neighbor, and the fact that the land will never be able to be used again in your lifetime. Do you want to continue this practice?

Landfills are an ecological disaster that no one talks about. In Columbiana County, a newly proposed landfill threatens a bald eagle nest, many other endangered species, a scenic waterway, and several agricultural communities.

Our eagles are a symbol of freedom and a vital part of our nation's heritage, and it is our responsibility to protect them and their natural habitat. The proximity of a landfill to a bald eagle's nest poses a significant threat to the eagle's health and well-being. Landfills attract predators like ravens and coyotes, which can prey on eagle chicks or eggs. Additionally, contaminants from the landfill can leach into the soil and water, which can be ingested by the eagles or their prey, leading to bioaccumulation and poisoning. Furthermore, the noise and activity from the landfill can disrupt the eagles' nesting behavior and make it difficult for them to raise their young successfully.

Agricultural communities are the backbone of our country, providing vital agricultural products. Landfills can contaminate groundwater and surface water through leachate, which is the liquid that drains from decomposing waste. This contaminated water can harm crops and livestock, and it can also be a health hazard for humans. They can emit harmful gases, such as methane and ammonia, which can harm crop yields and reduce air quality. Landfills can also contaminate soil with pollutants, such as heavy metals, which can reduce crop yields and make the land unsuitable for agriculture. Lastly, they can generate a significant amount of truck traffic, which can damage roads and disrupt traffic flow.

We are sending this petition to our representatives in Congress and the Ohio State House.

It is time to force the industries, the government, and the people to change their waste management practices. We need to update the RCRA, Clean Water Act, and Clean Air Act to reflect current waste management issues, give real solutions to current shortfalls, and develop new laws to eventually end the practice of solid waste landfills.

Additionally, we need to update all Natural resource protection laws to reflect our current ecological issues.

Update the Eagle Protection Act of 1940, and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and add protections for obvious displacement or take events for these animals.

IF IT CAN NOT BE REDUCED, REUSED, REBUILT, REFURBISHED, REFINISHED, RESOLD, RECYCLED OR COMPOSTED. THEN IT SHOULD BE RESTRICTED, RESIGNED OR REMOVED FROM PRODUCTION AND CIRCULATION.

Thank you for taking the time to read this important message. Together we are strong, together we are legion.
