The Issue

I write this petition not only as a concerned citizen of Vista but also as a parent. My young children and many others in the community actively engage in various aquatic activities at the Wave Waterpark. This space is a critical component of our community, currently as the only pool serving high school swim teams, water polo teams, and local clubs. Our community dynamics are currently under threat as the city mayor is advocating leasing the Wave to a private investor who specializes in amusement parks. Such a move could potentially restrict access and limit the use of these important facilities. This petition calls for the Wave to instead be converted into an aquatics center.

Converting the Wave into a municipal aquatics center would not only maintain but also extend its value to our community. With an aquatic center, the city could offer swim lessons all year round and water aerobics for our seniors as well as generate income by renting pool space to master programs for swim and water polo clubs. There is also a great opportunity to hold tournaments and CIF games therefore generating support for local businesses. For youth swim lessons, the city could offer those year-round. Learning how to swim cannot be accomplished in 3 months. To become water safe, it often takes a minimum of 6 months of lessons. With the lifespan of humans extending, many in the aging population seek aquatics exercise which tends to be low impact while offering great exercise. An aquatics center would not only benefit its community, but also the city in a financial capacity.

Let's explore the cons of leasing the Wave to a private investor. The city has stated that the Wave water park has never made money in all the years it has been in operation. That is highly feasible as the Wave is only open to the public 4 months out of the year. If we research water parks throughout California, most of these amusement parks must reduce their operating hours during winter, fall, and spring months. This move will not generate extra income for Vista as the hours of operation will not differ from our current schedule. To add to the unsustainability of building an amusement park, there will be two water parks within 20 minutes distance of the Wave, Legoland Water Park and Oceanside's upcoming Wave Pool. This would also cause East Vista Way to harbor more traffic. The mayor also promises that no high school program will be compromised but what about affordable youth summer programs and affordable lifeguard academies. All these programs could face challenges or become less affordable with private investment focused on generating profit rather than prioritizing community interest.

In the interests of our youth's development, our senior's health, and our community's integrity, I implore the city to reconsider leasing the Wave Waterpark to a private investor. Instead, let's transform it into an aquatic center, a move that aligns more with the needs of our community members. Please add your signature to this plea and let's together advocate for a healthier and accessible Vista for all its citizens.
