An appeal to help raise funds for the cafe’s fight against the eviction proceedings brought by the University church led by the vicar, the Revd William Lamb, has been launched on the CrowdJustice legal funding site.

After only 24 hours, the appeal has received 35 donations totalling £1,560, an average donation of £45. The cafe needs to raise £10,000 within 30 days for a full CrowdJustice appeal to begin.

The appeal aims to raise £100,000 in the coming months towards legal costs the cafe has already incurred in fighting the vicar’s claim and future costs estimated at £50,000 before trial. The case has now been listed for a 4-day hearing at the High Court in London starting on 28th October.

All donations are going to a special client account held by the cafe’s solicitors which can only be used for the mounting costs of fighting the church’s claim.

Cafe founder Will Pouget says that the cafe no longer has the resources needed to continue to fight the long-running case which began two years ago and needs more help now.

He said: “We have been hoping for an amicable settlement but so far this has not been possible and we need your support. We will be very grateful for any help you can give.”
