Save The Ucluelet Community Dog Park

The Issue

It has come to the attention of Ucluelet dog park users that the existing dog park is being considered for conversion into pickleball courts. While pickleball players absolutely deserve dedicated recreational space in Ucluelet, removing a heavily used dog park is not a reasonable or equitable solution.

Realistically, this dog park serves far more daily users than a pickleball court would. Dozens of local residents rely on this space year-round, rain or shine, to exercise and socialize their dogs. In a community that experiences rain roughly 200 days per year, outdoor pickleball courts would be usable for only a fraction of the time, resulting in significantly less overall community use of the space.

For years, dog park users have actively curated and maintained this area, volunteering countless hours and spending their own money to make it a welcoming, safe, and functional space for the community. Removing the park disregards that investment and erases an essential amenity that many residents depend on daily.

Eliminating this space also creates accessibility barriers. Many dog owners—particularly seniors, people with mobility challenges, or those with reactive or high-energy dogs—cannot replace this with long walks on trails. The dog park provides a controlled environment that supports healthy dogs, responsible ownership, and positive socialization.

Importantly, there are alternative locations in Ucluelet that could accommodate pickleball courts with far less disruption. For example, the parking lot near the seaplane base is used only a handful of times per year, would require fewer geotechnical upgrades, and is already adjacent to a space used for indoor pickleball. This and other underutilized areas should be seriously considered.

We urge decision-makers to apply common sense, recognize actual patterns of community use, and choose a location that expands recreational opportunities without removing an essential, well-loved space. The dog park is not surplus land—it is a vital community asset.
