Save the Turner Street Jetty – Stop the Closure & Demand Repairs

Save the Turner Street Jetty – Stop the Closure & Demand Repairs
The issue
Save the Turner Street Jetty – Stop the Closure & Demand Repairs!
To:
Margaret River Shire Council
Minister for Transport (WA)
Minister for Local Government (WA)
Heritage Council of Western Australia
Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER)
Why This Matters
The Turner Street Jetty in Augusta has been suddenly closed, with the Margaret River Shire citing structural deterioration as the reason. However:
✅ No evidence of past maintenance has been provided.
✅ The community was not consulted before the decision was made.
✅ The jetty is a historic and recreational icon, used for fishing, tourism, and social gatherings.
✅ No independent engineering report has been released to prove repairs are not viable.
✅ Public money funded this jetty, and the community has a right to be involved in its future.
✅ Environmental and heritage assessments have not been conducted, despite the jetty’s significance.
Instead of closing it down, the jetty should be repaired and preserved for future generations.
Our Demands
We, the residents, visitors, and supporters of Augusta, demand that:
1️⃣ The Margaret River Shire Council immediately releases all maintenance records and reports regarding the jetty’s condition.
2️⃣ An independent structural assessment is conducted and made publicly available before any demolition or permanent closure.
3️⃣ A full community consultation takes place before any irreversible decision is made.
4️⃣ Funding is secured to repair and maintain the jetty so it remains safe and accessible for locals and tourists.
5️⃣ If the Shire refuses to repair it, the jetty must be nominated for heritage protection, preventing its removal.
6️⃣ State and Federal funding options are explored to assist in restoring the jetty rather than destroying it.
