Save the Trenton Park Pool: Revenue Recovery Before Recreational Cuts!
The Issue
* Scroll to the bottom for updates, including a new communication from the Town of Trenton.
To Mayor Dove and the Trenton Town Council,
We, the undersigned residents of Trenton, strongly oppose the intention to permanently close the recently renovated Trenton Park outdoor pool. While we understand the Council’s objective to avoid a property tax increase to cover the projected $50,000 seasonal operational deficit, we believe stripping our community of this vital, heavily used asset is premature.
Instead of cutting essential recreational services, we demand the Town Council implement an aggressive revenue recovery and economic development strategy to fully fund the pool's operations. We propose the following viable alternatives to closure:
Recover Owed Municipal Taxes First: The Town is currently carrying over $426,000 in uncollected tax receivables.[1] We ask that the Council prioritize the rigorous collection of these arrears and dedicate the first $50,000 recovered directly to a Trenton Park Pool operating fund.
Capture Modular Housing Tax Revenues: We urge the Council to finalize boundary adjustments and enforce agreements to ensure 100% of the commercial property taxes from the local modular housing sector—specifically the Eastcut Wood Building Solutions and Trenton WoodWorks facilities—flow directly into Trenton's municipal revenues.
Equitable Leasing of Town Assets: The Town must implement formal commercial leases, utility recovery charges, or property tax assessments for private businesses utilizing town property. This includes the Express Yourself Café, which operates out of the town-owned 1967 CN rail caboose at 131 Main Street. These commercial revenues should be redirected to support community parks.
Proactive Business Attraction: To reverse the erosion of our commercial tax base, the Town's economic development team must actively recruit small-format hybrid grocery and fuel stations (such as a Needs Convenience). Restoring daily-needs businesses to Trenton will generate the sustainable, long-term tax base required to support our infrastructure.
We ask the Council to pause the closure, implement these fiscally responsible solutions, and keep the Trenton Park pool open for generations to come.
UPDATE June 3, 2026:
The Town of Trenton has issued a new communication clarifying their position and inviting "innovative" proposals from the community on how the pool can be saved from the chopping block:
