There are many issues to consider during the Atlanta Mayoral Runoff Election on Dec 5. On the issue of saving trees in Grant Park related to current plans for the Grant Park Gateway parking deck, consider this. A community member asked both candidates, Mary Norwood and Keisha Lance Bottoms, about their positions on the Grant Park parking deck during a greenspace forum on Nov 29. Their responses are summarized as follows:
Mary Norwood:
She understands the need to save trees in Grant Park. She wants to go back to the drawing board. She was involved with the Piedmont Park parking deck for a year and a half, and she was instrumental in helping it be placed toward the back of the park rather than in the open field, as originally planned. She wants to visit the location of the proposed Grant Park parking deck and see various schematics of what can be done, if the deck is not a done deal by the time she is in office.
Keisha Lance Bottoms:
She articulated that anytime there is a proposed parking deck in a community, it’s going to be a lightning rod. She expresses the need to be sensitive to neighbor concerns, but her belief is that the park needs a garage to address parking for the zoo. She doesn’t want cars from the zoo clogging up neighborhood streets.
