Save 'The Tree' Pub in Box Hill, Our Community's Cherished Gathering Place
The Issue
Our local pub, 'The Tree,' in Box Hill, Tadworth, Surrey, is more than just an establishment. It's where our community has celebrated milestones, met friends, and shared memories with family. The pub’s charm and historical significance are integral to our neighbourhood's character, fostering community spirit, supporting local events, and providing a welcoming space for all. Over the years, this pub has been more than just a backdrop for personal stories; it's been a constant, comforting presence in our lives, radiating warmth and connection within our community. The potential loss of such an indispensable treasure saddens us immensely.
Not only a social hub, 'The Tree' pub also contributes to the local economy, creating jobs and driving tourism. Protection of such historic sites is crucial for preserving our cultural heritage and maintaining a sense of identity. The closure of a pub can send ripples through a community, with research indicating that neighbourhoods with a local pub have stronger community feel (Cambridge University, 2016).
We ask you to join us in our mission to protect this invaluable piece of heritage for future generations to cherish. Our plea is not just for us, but for every individual who has found solace within its comforting walls and those who have yet to experience its warmth. Let us ensure that future generations have a place to gather, to celebrate, to reminisce, and to feel connected. Save our pub! Please sign our petition to protect this massive piece of our community's heart and soul.
Background info
Box Hill is an iconic Surrey location, that many of us have visited multiple times for brisk walks and breath-taking views. There are plenty of places to stop off nearby, with pubs kept busy due to the beauty spot.
A pub in Box Hill, Tadworth, is up for grabs for a cool £1.5 million. The large venue is set on more than three acres of land, with substantial garden space. Inside the pub is a large snug and bar area, dining room and large French doors overlooking the garden. Under the pub is a decent-sized cellar.
Upstairs is a three-bedroom flat complete with two kitchens and who bathrooms. There is also a sitting room and storage.
It is believed that the pub can sit up to 120 people, and has the space to park more than 60 cars on site. The pub is roughly a four-minute drive from the Box Hill hiking car park on Zig Zag Road, and Betchworth train station of around half a mile away.
Originally the pub was called the Hand in Hand, and was renamed to the Box Tree in November 2011. After that the name was changed to The Tree to avoid confusion.
Previously the pub was used to welcome guests for food and drink as well as host events. Weddings and parties were hosted at the pub as well as comedy nights and live music. The pub has been closed since July 2023.
