A recent update from Irvine Watchdog's Branda Lin:

"At this Tuesday's City Council meeting, Mayor Farrah Khan and Councilmember Mike Carroll are seeking to pass an ordinance that would drastically change the current rules for public comments, limiting each resident to ONE COMMENT of as little as 90 seconds PER MEETING, and would schedule all public comments near the beginning of the meeting.

Irvine residents have a set of rights, including the right to participate in decisions that affect our public welfare and our city. This policy would take away from that right and our voice. In the last year, this City Council has worked against residents in ways we have never seen before since our city incorporated in 1971.

Additionally, it would impose content restrictions on public comments that raise questions of constitutionality under the First Amendment and legality under California’s Ralph M. Brown Act.

And it would also limit the number of days we get notified of the agenda, going against the unanimous, bipartisan enactment of Irvine's Sunshine Ordinance that just passed less than 4 years ago!

Please make your voice heard and let our City Council know we want to strengthen the voice of the people, not silence residents!

Email the City Council at: IrvineCityCouncil@cityofirvine.org today and let them know we oppose this policy! And please share!"
