SAVE THE SUBSTATION

The Issue

We were informed that this restaurant is being demolished along with Bannockburn Village located at UCR. Instead of being given a fair opportunity to relocate, the school and those in charge of this decision are offering the owner only three months of compensation, with the expectation that he’s fully moved out by June.

Three months.

What hurts even more is that he asked to extend until July, simply so this year’s graduates could come back one last time and eat there. That alone says everything about the kind of person he is. But even that request feels like the bare minimum—and it isn’t enough.

This isn’t just a business. This is his life’s work. Substation isn’t just a place for UCR students—it’s a home for people across the city. Over the years, he’s built more than a customer base; he’s built a family.

The owner is genuinely one of the sweetest people you’ll ever meet. He told us something we’ll never forget:
“We serve service, not food.”
That’s what he teaches his employees. That’s the culture he’s created. This isn’t “just a job” to him—these are his people, his family, and they’re being taken away without real support.

This petition is meant to create noise. Because compensation for a few months is not justice. We should be striving for him to be relocated and remain a part of the UCR community, not pushed out and forgotten. A community like ours should protect the places and people that make it feel like home.

We propose a fair negotiation for relocation. Please join us in our fight to save this crucial part of the UCR community by signing our petition. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that future generations continue to enjoy not only the delicious subs but also the warmth and culture of this iconic restaurant.
