UPDATE 9/28/26- After the official announcement made by President Tisa Mason on Monday, many have reached out to the museum to try and help however they can. The FHSU Foundation later made a post yesterday, with a link on their page to help donate to the Sternberg Museum. The goal is said to be $855,000 by the end of the 2026, to help keep the museum open for another year. No, this isn’t a permanent solution, but statements have been made that this is to help buy everyone time to figure out a better permanent option to keeping the museum open and operational. A lot of people right now have doubts and are untrusting of Fort Hays, about the way the school has gone about this whole situation, and also how their true values seem to be focused elsewhere. This doubt and untrust is valid considering everything in the last week. But even if it is FHSU, this foundation stepped up with a hopeful approach to this financial crisis. So, with many people supporting this petition, and making donations to help promote this petition, please share as much as possible and donate to the actual museum itself through this link. It is with a heavy heart that I share the unfortunate news of Fort Hays State University's decision to close the Sternberg Museum of Natural History by the end of this year. This decision strikes a painful chord with many of us in Hays, Kansas, and beyond, as the museum has been an integral part of our community for over 25 years.

The Sternberg Museum is not just a building filled with artifacts; it's a living repository of our natural history, a gathering place for learning and inspiration for locals and visitors alike. It has played a crucial role in fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of our natural world for countless individuals. Its exhibits and live animals have inspired budding scientists, provided educational insights for school children, and brought together diverse groups of people from all walks of life, united in their curiosity and love for history and nature. 

Moreover, the museum has been an economic catalyst, contributing to the local economy by attracting tourists, supporting nearby businesses, and providing jobs and volunteer opportunities. Its closure would be a significant blow to Ellis County's cultural and economic landscape.

We believe that there are alternative ways to address any financial constraints the university may be experiencing without closing this invaluable institution. We propose exploring options such as increasing community involvement, establishing partnerships with other universities and scientific entities, and launching targeted fundraising campaigns to help maintain museum operations.

We, therefore, urge Fort Hays State University to reconsider this decision and engage with the community to find practical solutions that will allow the Sternberg Museum of Natural History to continue its legacy of education and preservation. We are confident that, with collective effort and support, we can ensure the museum remains a vibrant part of our community.
