On August 25th, Delwest hosted a virtual neighborhood meeting to discuss some of the commentary they have received in regard to rezoning and redeveloping the land and property on 79th and North Pecos in Sherrelwood, CO. This pending development is to be called the Sherrelwood Village Filing No. 2. You could listen to that meeting via a link in the case file at www.adcogov.org/planning/currentcases
In this meeting, Delwest said that they plan to move forward with their plans as intended and demolish the "bubble building" despite what we've got to say about it. But, they are talking with Hyland Hills recreation district and would be willing to come up with a sort of homage to our beloved building in the form of a park pavilion. If you have any ideas on how this structure should potentially look, please send your sketch to infodesk@rmcscolorado.com, or post it on InstaGram using the hashtag #spaceshiphouse to give your drawing a chance at coming to life!
During the meeting, neighbors brought up the concern that the development company doesn't know what type of materials this building is made out of; therefore they don't know exactly what kind of debris and toxins will be released into the air when the demo project begins. It is rumored to be made from polyurethane foam, which in the form of activated dust, can present severe health risks to children or anyone with a sensitive respiratory system.
Other neighbors have brought up the fact that the building and the surrounding park used to be part of the BFI landfill that operated in the area back in the 60s, and it could create a serious public health hazard if these materials aren't appropriately removed.
Delwest has submitted a new plan for their townhouse complex, and it is currently in a reviewing period before Adams County decides on how to proceed. This deadline to send in any commentary on this case is on NOVEMBER 11th. Please let Adams County know your thoughts on this matter and encourage them to reclaim the property so it could be accurately tested for hazardous material before anything further happens with it.
