**Chugach Electric's Public Snow River Dam Presentations**

Peninsula Rivers Conservancy
Apr 9, 2017
Chugach Electric is holding two public information sessions to present their Snow River Dam Project. This is the most critical stage in the process to show them that we do not want this dam in our back yard! It is imperative that we show up and shut it down! We have added links below to RSVP if you have Facebook. The first event will be held in Anchorage on Monday April 17th at the The Lakefront Anchorage, 4800 Spenard Rd, Anchorage, Alaska 99517 at 7pm. https://www.facebook.com/events/1695218840776548??ti=ia The second event will be held in Moose Pass on Tuesday April 18th at the Moose Pass Sportsmen's Club 33675 Depot Rd / PO Box 72, Moose Pass, Alaska 99631 at 7pm. https://www.facebook.com/events/142002462998593??ti=ia Some of the top reasons this dam is a bad idea: -Chugach Electric has pledged to spend $1,000,000 dollars during the study period to study their "concept" that has literally been studied and rejected dozens of times since the 1950's - this money is coming directly from ratepayers. ML&P has raised their rates as much as 30% to cover the costs to build their new Plant 2A after claiming it would save their ratepayers money. -The Snow River is recommended as "Wild and Scenic," a designation by congress which gives rivers their most powerful protections. Less than 1/4 of 1% of all rivers in the United States receive this designation. -The Snow River is the main tributary river to the Kenai River and supports a very delicate ecosystem -5,321 acres (approximately 20 miles long) of terrestrial habitat (moose, wolves, bear habitat, etc...) will be flooded for a 1,200 foot deep reservoir -3 Massive dams and an 8,000 sq. ft. powerhouse would be built on the pristine landscape -Nearly 17,000 acres of publicly-owned land in the Chugach National Forest would be given to Chugach Electric for this project -Chugach Electric has stated, on record, that they do not anticipate any increase in the demand for electricity on the Railbelt. They anticipate a flat-line in the demand. -Chugach Electric recently built a Natural Gas-Fired plant in 2013, that they now claim they can't find a secure source for natural gas (after looking "decades and decades out" to anticipate demand for electricity and the means to produce it). -Chugach Electric specifically chose the Snow River Corridor for its "storage potential," meaning that their dams would control the flow of the Kenai River year-round (holding back massive amounts of water in the summer and releasing massive amounts of water in the winter - completely opposite of the natural flow of the Kenai) -The Railbelt Utilities notoriously work independently and if they worked together, they could save ratepayers upwards of $100 million dollars annually The absurdities keep piling up and their story has changed regarding the reasons why they want to build these dams. We will continually update our site to point out these absurdities and arm you with the necessary information to call out Chugach Electric at these meetings.
