Good afternoon everyone and hopefully your day is going well!
I wanted to give an update to everyone on the current situation, because we have some good news in terms of support from the people.
On May 21st, at 5:00 PM several community members and organizers spoke about the Sands Blvd Bridge issue unagendaed. They voiced their discontent with the mayor's practices, which border the line on illegality, they spoke up for their fellow neighbor and advocated for our bridge to stay exactly where it is. We fought for the vision and mission of a City of Bridges, and that fight started off strong. We were on Fox 4, petitions for recalling the mayor were being circulated and pressure is being put on the City Council to do the right thing, and stand with the people of Cape Coral. We have strong support from the people present at that meeting as well, so we have supporters! However, the fight is far from over.
On May 28th at 9:00 AM the City Council will be having what they call a Committee of the Whole meeting, essentially meaning it's a regular City Council meeting because everyone will be there. This is the day they have chosen to specifically discuss the issue relating to the Sands Bridge and where they wish to get public comment from the people, so this is especially our time to voice the concerns we have. We must ensure we have a large presence at this meeting so we can show the Council we do not want it to go. We can get the presence of the media to amplify our voices, we can show to our fellow neighbors our resolve with this, and we can show the Mayor he cannot decide to remove a bridge because he has a property that would directly benefit from its removal.
So as a recap, the first meeting went very well, we got Fox 4 to focus on the issue and we are now preparing for the May 28th meeting. Keep a lookout for more updates and information and as always if you have any questions, comments or concerns reach out to simon.monteleone@gmail.com and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
