We are making real impact — and this is the moment that matters most.
In just a few weeks, our community has:
- Grown to over 1,600 supporters
- Reached the media, including the New York Post
- Secured a Town Hall with City and State agencies
- Begun exploring potential legal action
This progress is the result of your engagement and support.
Why This Matters
The Steam Plant demolition is moving forward under an “emergency” framework - without full public transparency.
There are serious concerns about:
- Potential exposure to hazardous materials (asbestos, lead, PCBs, petroleum)
- Lack of publicly disclosed environmental testing and safety plans
- Limited community involvement in decisions affecting our health and future
- We are simply asking for the same level of transparency and safety applied in past projects on Roosevelt Island.
Our Requests
We are calling for:
- A pause of demolition beyond immediate safety stabilization
- Full public disclosure of environmental and safety information
- Independent environmental and structural review
- Meaningful community engagement
- Feasibility study and Evaluation of adaptive reuse options

The Bottom Line
This is about safety, transparency, and accountability.
We are calling for a pause until the community has the information it deserves and a voice in what happens next.
