The Issue

The Rio School District Musical Theatre Program is at risk of losing district funding, putting a beloved and impactful educational opportunity for students in grades 5–8 in jeopardy.

Each year, students from across nine Rio School District school sites dedicate significant time outside the regular school day to participate in this program. For eight months, they meet after school for three hours a day, twice a week, preparing for one weekend of unforgettable performances that showcase their hard work, dedication, and growth.

But the value of this program extends far beyond the stage.

The musical theatre program helps students develop confidence, communication skills, teamwork, leadership, time management, creativity, and resilience. Students learn to work toward a common goal, support one another, overcome challenges, and take pride in their accomplishments. For many participants, the program becomes a place where they find belonging, discover new talents, build lasting friendships, and gain confidence that carries into every aspect of their lives.

Research consistently shows that arts education improves student engagement, attendance, academic achievement, and social-emotional development. At a time when students face increasing challenges related to anxiety, isolation, and mental health, programs that foster connection, self-expression, and community are more important than ever.

While we understand the financial pressures facing the district, eliminating this program would remove a unique educational experience that serves students from across the district and provides benefits that extend far beyond a single performance weekend. The musical theatre program is an investment in student growth, leadership, and well-being.

We are asking the Rio School District Board of Trustees to continue supporting and funding the Musical Theatre Program and to work collaboratively with parents and community members to identify sustainable funding solutions that will preserve this opportunity for future students.

By signing this petition, you are showing your support for arts education, student development, and the continuation of a cherished program that has positively impacted countless students and families throughout our district over the last decade.

Please sign and share this petition to help ensure that future generations of Rio students continue to have access to this transformative experience.
