Nestled in the heart of our Rinconada Court neighborhood in Los Altos stands a magnificent, 200-year-old coastal live oak, a true testament to nature's enduring beauty. This ancient tree, located in the median of our cul-de-sac, has witnessed generations come and go. Its grandeur provides not only shade and serenity but also a living link to our past. For many of us, this tree is more than just greenery; it is a beloved part of our community, a silent guardian of our shared space. Yet, despite its undeniable presence and the joy it brings, there's a proposal to remove it. The reason? Alleged hazards to the surroundings.

However, a comprehensive arborist report clearly states that this tree poses low risk. Instead, it requires nurturing and appropriate care to continue thriving. The assessment, conducted by local experts, indicates that with routine maintenance, this majestic oak can remain a safe, integral part of our neighborhood's charm for many more years.

The local council argues that removing the tree is a preventive measure, but we believe it's a hasty step. It's crucial to consider the ecological benefits this oak brings: acting as a habitat for local wildlife, improving air quality, and contributing to the area's aesthetic appeal. Live oaks are known for their resilience and ecological value, and preserving them aligns with our city's commitment to maintaining green spaces and protecting the environment in the face of increasing urban development.

We have lived alongside this tree, celebrating life's milestones under its canopy. Its removal would not only strip away a piece of our community's identity but also set a precedent for the unnecessary loss of more trees statewide, if not nationwide. We owe it to future generations to preserve such natural wonders, emblematic of our heritage and commitment to sustainability.

Therefore, we call upon the Los Altos City Council to halt any plans for its removal and instead allocate resources for its preservation and care. Together, let us choose conservation over destruction, fostering a legacy of respect for our natural environment. Join us in this effort to save our beloved Rinconada Court live oak—sign the petition today and help keep our tree alive for tomorrow!
